The #nomakeup Selfie - My thoughts

I'm not sure if you've all seen the little trend going on over on Facebook, but there has been a 'no makeup selfie' trend happening for the past couple of days where lots of ladies have been taking photos of themselves completely bare faced to raise awareness of cancer. I know lots of people have failed to see the point of it, as if the only way we can raise awareness and support cancer sufferers is to donate money to the cause. Lots of us do this and we don't need to raise awareness in this sense I don't think, so I thought I'd explain my take on the whole thing.
I see it as serving quite a few purposes actually, firstly it's trending therefore it is raising awareness of the cause not only to encourage people to donate money but also to encourage women and men to look for the early signs of cancer ie. checking your breasts, checking your testicles, being aware of abnormal bowel movements, having regular smear tests etc. etc. it also is a chance to bring current affairs to the forefront of peoples minds. I took an opportunity to encourage people to sign the 'Sophies's Choice' petition; Sophie was a 19 year old girl who died of cervical cancer... a smear test could have caught the cancer early and ultimately saved her life but because of the current lower age limit she wasn't eligible for a smear test and was denied one time and time again. The petition is to try and get age limit lowered and help save more lives.
I also see it as showing solidarity to all the beautiful women who have to struggle with their body image on a daily basis because of cancer. I know that wearing no makeup is not anywhere near on the same scale as having your hair/eyebrows/lashes fall out or having a double mastectomy but it shows that I am thankful for what I have and that I am trying to understand how these women feel every single day. I also want to take this opportunity to thank the amazing people at Look Good, Feel Better who do a fantastic job in making women feel good about themselves and making themselves feel more confident with what they have!
Raising awareness of cancer isn't all about seeing how much money we can raise, or just about explaining what cancer is. As you can hopefully see, it's much more than that, I hope some of you will join me in posting a natural photo of yourself somewhere on the internet along with some links to some cancer organisations which are close to your heart.
Leave me links to your posts below, if you choose to join in.

UPDATE: Since posting this there has been another 100,000+ signatures added to the Sophie's Choice petition and there has been a surge in donations to cancer charities. I know this 'trend' offends some people but I really think the positives far outweigh the negatives in this case; those taking #nomakeupselfie's for their own selfish reasons should be ashamed of themselves BUT everyone who has taken a selfie has contributed towards the massive buzz around cancer awareness over the past 24 hours! I wish people would see the bright side of life rather than the bad in everything that happens!

  1. I'm completely behind this trend and think that anything raising awareness is a good thing. You definitely don't need make up though you look lovely!
